The Alpha brainwaves range is one of the four basic brainwave states that we function in every day. Delta, Theta, and Beta are the others. The Alpha state is where we are most productive and provides a lot of benefits.
Alpha brainwaves are usually around 10 cycles per second and the range is from 7-13 cycles per second. These are oscillating electrical voltages in the brain. However, the voltage is very low, only about a millionths of a volt.
Alpha brainwaves are not always present. For example, if a person is highly aroused such as in fear or anger, their brains would be in the Beta state and no alpha waves would be present.
At the opposite end of the scale, when we are sleeping, Theta and Delta states predominate. Theta and Delta are the lowest cycles per second and this is the area of deep sleep and meditation. No Alpha waves are present during deep sleep.
People who are able to have more alpha brainwaves activity will have less anxiety and stress. High levels of stress and anxiety can lead to a number of stress related diseases. Consequently, having more Alpha brainwave activity will lead to a stronger bodily immune system and less health problems.
Scientific studies have shown that highly creative people have more alpha waves. If you want to have a creative inspiration, you have to have a surge of alpha brainwaves. Creative people have the ability to produce these surges when they are confronted with a problem to solve. Normal and non-creative people are unable to generate alpha waves when they are confronted with problems to solve. If you want to be more creative, increase your alpha waves.
High levels of peak performance have been linked to alpha waves. It has been demonstrated that elite athletes are able to produce a surge alpha waves just before they act. For example, a golfer will enter this “zone” just before making a shot. You’ve probably heard an athlete talk about being in this zone during a time of superior performance.
